September 2010: StudentandActivist.org -- The premier online destination for news about community involvement at Michigan high schools; Students from the University of Detroit Jesuit gave a day of service on Tuesday, Oct. 26, to help beautify two Detroit landmarks. As part of their “Pledge Detroit” fundraising project, Jesuit students removed invasive species, planted bulbs, and cleaned up trash all over Belle Isle. Students also performed clean-up work at Detroit’s Historic Fort Wayne. The school’s motto is “Men for Others” and it was clearly demonstrated in the students service efforts at the two Detroit gems. The project was the idea of the school’s student senate. The students wanted to take a more hands-on approach to this year’s fundraiser that benefits the school’s scholarship fund. Since 1974, Jesuit students have raised money with a walk-a-thon. “Instead of just making footprints through the city, I thought we should go out and do service work to earn the money for the scholarship fund,” student senate president Alan Tadian told the Detroit Free Press. The students’ efforts were lauded by Detroit Mayor Dave Bing: “I am both honored and pleased by U of D Jesuit High School’s commitment to the City of Detroit. By engaging their students in solution-based activities, they are part of a growing effort to make a difference while remaining true to their mission, Creating Men for Others. U of D Jesuit’s ‘Pledge Detroit!’ initiative should serve as an example to organizations and institutions across metro-Detroit.”
