Count, calculate while you cook

Help your children realize that math is around them all day long by practicing math concepts in the kitchen.

For example, pull out a favorite family recipe that doesn’t have too many ingredients and make a double batch with your child. Before you begin, work together to multiply each ingredient by 2 to determine the extended amounts to use.  To practice division, take a larger recipe and divide all the ingredients by 2 to get the reduced amounts to use.

To practice percentages, take any container of food with a Nutrition Facts label and work with your child to determine what nutrients are yet needed after consuming that food. For example, if the cereal box says that it provides 30 percent of your needed iron for the day, what percentage of your iron requirement is yet needed in the other foods you eat that day?

Math is all around us every day! Help your children realize how helpful math can be everyday in our lives.
