Bloomfield Hills – For one day the volleyball teams from cross-town foes Lahser and Andover traded their traditional school colors and united in pink to raise funds for breast cancer research.

The two schools put their rivalry aside at Oct. 7's "Volley for a Cure" charity match held at Bloomfield Hills Lahser to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation and to raise awareness of the risks and symptoms of breast cancer.

The atmosphere in the Lahser gym was electric as the raucous, overflow crowd was a sea of pink dressed in "Volley for a Cure" t-shirts, which served as admission to the event.

The Knights were outfitted in light pink t-shirts and the Barons sported a darker pink version. Referees, announcers, and coaches were also wearing "Cure" t-shirts. Even the volleyballs were pink and white.

"Volley for a Cure" was the idea of second-year Lahser head coach Patty Kopmeyer, who worked with long-time Andover coach Bob Hurdle to coordinate the event. The players from both teams and a devoted group of parents did the rest. The teams sold hundreds of t-shirts, solicited donations, and raised funds with concessions sales.

Kopmeyer is a former Andover student who played for Hurdle in the early 1980s.

"We like to do a fund-raiser with my team each year," said Kopmeyer. "This cause seemed like the perfect fit. The girls and parents went above and beyond the call of duty to make this happen. It was a total team effort, the junior varsity and freshman teams included."

The Lahser topped Andover in the match 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-8) to improve to 28-9-3 on the season. The young Barons move to 13-11. The schools' junior varsity and freshman teams also competed during the charity event.

"This cause makes it very easy to put our rivalry aside," said Hurdle. "Maybe for the first time in the rivalry, what we're doing before the game and on the sidelines was more important than the outcome of the game on the court.

The Susan G. Komen for the Cure foundation is the world’s largest grassroots network of breast cancer survivors and activists fighting to save lives, empower people, ensure quality care for all and energize science to find the cures. For the past 26 years, Komen for the Cure has played a critical role in every major advance in the fight against breast cancer – transforming how the world talks about and treats this disease and helping to turn millions of breast cancer patients into breast cancer survivors.
