Box Score

Troy -- Kalamazoo Christian used another incredible defensive effort to beat Madison Heights Bishop Foley 1-0 June 14 at Athens High School to earn their second straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 Championship.

"I think this is one of the most complete teams we had," said Kalamazoo Christian Head Coach Ron Smilanich. "We have a defense that has been outstanding and only given up 10 goals all year."

Senior Rachel DenHartigh scored the game-winner from 18 yards out after a pass from senior Kate Klooster at the 30:21 mark of the first half. Goalie Mandy Engbers saved three shots to earn the shutout.

"I think we have the best defense in the state," said DenHartigh. "They play 80 minutes, and they never come off the field. I have had a hard time scoring all year, but I had a goal in the semifinals, and we didn't have anything going, so I said I might as well try again."

Eleven-time champion Bishop Foley finished the season at 11-11-1. Kalamazoo Christian finished 22-2 and earned their fourth Division 4 title in the past six years.
