Battle Creek -- Bay City All Saints beat Lutheran Westland 2-1 to claim the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 Championship June 14 at C.O. Brown Stadium.

Later in the day, the All Saints Softball team beat Homer 4-0 to win the Division 4 Softball Championship, marking the time in Michigan the same school won both baseball and softball state championships in the same season.

"They've had visions of this from the beginning," said All Saints Head Coach Mike Regulski. "We have a green board in our practice facility, and I walk in and look at the board. Already there on the board in big letters it says, 'STATE CHAMPS.'

"I said, 'Guys, what are you talking about? You haven't even hit the ball yet and you're talking state champions.'"

"Well, it stayed on the board all season long," Regulski said of the writing, "and is probably still there today. So, they had the vision, and I knew they had the ability to play."

Sophomore Adam Pijaszek pitched a seven-hit complete game and stranded 10 Lutheran Westland runners to help All Saints (28-12-1) make the vision come true. Pijaszek struck out seven and walked just two.

“We had guys in scoring position and could not get the big hit,’’ said Lutheran Westland Head Coach Kevin Wade. “He (Pijaszek) pitched well and he got out of a couple of jams where he came up with big pitches. He got ahead in the count with a good first pitch and we took our hacks. They also made plays when they had to.’’

Junior Matt Mikolajczak drove in junior Justin Gielda for the first run for the Cougars with a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

In the fourth inning, sophomore Kevin Gwizdala singled in junior Aaron Janer, who had reached base on a fielder's choice, for the eventual game winner.

The Warriors (25-8) scored their only run in the fourth. With one out, Nate Bachert struck out but reached first on a wild pitch. He took second on a single by Ryan Baglow and scored on a single to right by Aaron Derminer.

It was the second title for Regulski, who also guided All Saints to the Division 4 championship in 2000. All Saints also won the Class B title in 1981 and the Class C title in 1978.
