Ann Arbor -- Division 4 No. 3-ranked Madison Heights Bishop Foley edged Ann Arbor Greenhills
1-0 June 6 at Pioneer High School to win the Michigan High School Athletic Association Region 14 championship and advance to the state
semifinals for the first time since 2003.
The game was called due to severe weather with 29 minutes left in the
second half, ending the season for a disappointed Greenhills team that reached the state finals the past two years.
The Ventures came out strong in the first 15 minutes as they pressured Greenhills early. However the first lightening strike of the
night soon put a stop to the play with the score still tied at 0.
Bishop Foley continued its strong play after
the delay and scored before the half as senior Rachael Reed put in a long free kick that skidded over the Greenhills goalkeeper to
put the Ventures up 1-0. It was Reed's third goal of the season but her second game winning goal in three nights.
In the second half Greenhills came out stronger and began to get a little pressure on Bishop Foley. However 11 minutes into the second
half more lightening was spotted and the teams were forced to halt play a second time. After an hour and a half rain delay,
the game was called at 10:45p.m.. Behind a solid defensive effort, sophomore goalkeeper Amanda Mancini made one save to earn her eighth
shutout of the season.
Bishop Foley will move on to the semifinals to take on Cardinal Mooney, a 2-0 winner over
Elkton Pigeon Bay Port Laker. The game will be the first indoor state playoff game taking place at Ultimate Soccer Arena in Pontiac next
Wednesday. Game time is to be determined.
Bishop Foley has a long tradition of excellence in girls soccer, winning
the Division 3 championship in 2003, 2002 and 1998. They also claimed Division 2 titles in 2001 and 1999, and.won Class B championships
in 1997, 1995, 1994, 1993, 1990, and 1988.
