Notre Dame-bound and senior co-captain Shannon Mathews led the Cranes as she won her fourth-straight No. 1 singles championship, beating Detroit Country Day's Chloe Karoub, Detroit Country Day, 6-0, 6-1 for the title.
Mathews joins Dawn Martin (Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett, 1985-88) and Kendra Howard (Detroit Country Day, 1990-93) as the state's only four-time No. 1 singles state champions. Martin's and Howard's championships occurred in Division 4.
"It was a great way to go out," said Mathews. "For the seniors to win coming in and coming out was amazing. It was a true team effort. We couldn't have done it without everyone contributing."
Senior co-captain Danielle Thomasma also won her fourth-straight title, combining with freshman sensation Natasha Dabrowski to win the No. 1 doubles title, beating Allegan's Shelby Schulz and Aly Gorby, 6-1, 6-4.
Thomasma won the 2005 and 2006 No. 3 singles title and was the 2004 No.
1 doubles champion with Alyssa Pinkos. Thomasma joins Paula Reichert (Grosse Pointe South, 1978-81) and Ashley Smith (Portage Northern,
1998-2001) as four-time individual champions.
Leinweber is a two-time state champion and also reached the semifinals at No. 2 singles in 2006 despite being injured. She was the
2005 No. 2 singles champion and the 2004 No. 3 singles champion.
Mathews, Leinweber, and Thomasma were key members of
the Cranes' 2004 championship team as freshmen and now own 10 individual state championships between them.

Country Day finished the day with two individual titles, as Brittany Zhang beat East Grand Rapid's Julia Ellis, 6-3, 6-3, for the No. 3 singles title.
Andover won two doubles championships as Jessica Langnas and Sarah Atkinson beat Allegan's Rachel Cook and Katie Haist, 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-4, for the No. 2 doubles championship.
The Barons' Sammi Trauben and Laura Sillman won the No. 4 doubles title, beating Holland Christian's Bethany Zoerhof and Karalyne Cousins, 6-1, 6-1.
In addition to winning the 2008 and 2004 titles, Cranbrook Head Coach Keith Cullen also won a
D3 state title with the Cranes in 1999. The Cranes won a Class C-D championship in 1979 and Class B titles from 1980-1982 under Head
Coach Nancy Ryan, Class B championships in 1988 under Bob Clement, and from 1989-1991 under Peter Favorian. Cullen also won boys
state titles with Brother Rice from 1998 to 2000.
"We came here on a mission," said Cullen. "We knew we were going to have tough competition in Allegan and Andover. But we were determined to get the victory. ... We have three great senior captains who had done this before and they wanted to finish their careers at the top. I was so proud of them. They truly deserved it."
