Bloomfield Hills -- Division 2 No. 1-ranked Bloomfield Hills Marian remained unbeaten with a 3-1 win over Catholic High School League rival Warren Regina 3-1 on Senior Day on May 6.

Senior Shannon Neville scored two goals in the first half and sophomore Stephanie Pilarski added a goal in the second half for the Mustangs, who improve to 12-0-1 overall and 10-0 in the CHSL.

"It was nice to get a win on Senior Day," said Head Coach Barry Brodsky. "I think we played well overall."

Marian moved up to the No. 1 spot in the latest Division 2 coaches rankings, ahead of Dewitt at No. 2, and defending state champion Grand Rapids Forest Hills Central at No. 3.

"I think that ranking is a little bit of our reputation instead of actual results," said Brodsky. "We'll see in the Catholic League Tournament if we are truly worthy of being ranked that high."

Marian has won the CHSL title each of the past five years. The Mustangs beat Farmington Hills Mercy 2-1 in overtime for the 2007 A_B title.

The Mustangs open the 2008 CHSL playoffs Thursday with a game against Dearborn Divine Child. If they get past the Falcons, ahead in the playoffs could be Division 3 honorable mention Pontiac Notre Dame Prep and D3 No. 3-ranked Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard.

The Mustangs look to improve on last year's state semifinal appearance, where they fell to cross-town rival Bloomfield Hills Lahser 1-0. Lahser fell to Central in the final.

Brodsky's Mustangs won state titles in 2003 and 2004.

Seniors Danielle Kamenec and Sarah Whitty, and junior Anina Cicerone are this year's captains. Whitty and Cincerone both were first-team all-state players along with junior goalie Whitney Sarkis. Kamenec earned honorable mention all-state honors and recently signed with Bellarmine University in Louisville, Kentucky, accepting a four-year full-ride soccer scholarship.

Marian will also face tough tests in North Farmington, Brighton, and Fenton in the coming weeks before the start of the state playoffs.

"I think we have as much talent as those championship teams from 2003 and 2004 … but we haven't been challenged yet in an 80-minute game," said Brodsky. "The next two weeks should tell us a lot about this team,"

Freshman Rachel Dandar scored for Regina (6-4-3/3-4-3).
