Several incredible Michigan students were recently named as 2008's Next Step Magazine Super Teens.

Next Step Magazine is a nationally distributed college, career and life-planning magazine for high school students.

Super Teens are selected based on an application that reviews a student's volunteer activities, leadership, and plans for the future.

The students and their award summaries follow:

Travon Johnson

When most students are at home on Saturday mornings, Travon Johnson is attending engineering classes through the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program. "This program has helped me prepare myself to become the engineer that I inspire to be," he says. A junior at Southfield High School from Southfield, Mich., Travon is a member of National Honor Society, the National Society of Black Engineers, student congress and the varsity football and track teams. He also volunteers as a teen mentor, tutor and for City Heroes. Travon plans to study mechanical engineering at college.

Stephanie Jordet

With more than 380 hours of community service under her belt, it's clear Stephanie Jordet enjoys giving back to her community. As a senior at Dearborn High School in Dearborn, Mich., she is the treasurer of Key Club, vice president of French club and a member of running club. Through her youth group, Stephanie has volunteered to paint houses and churches and feed the homeless. "I enjoy youth group because I get the opportunity to work with a group of people my own age who care about the world," she says. She plans to attend the University of Michigan and become an elementary school teacher.

Paula Langley

Through her high school's Habitat for Humanity Youth Build Committee, Paula Langley helped raise enough money to build a home for a family. Paula, a senior at Novi High School from Novi, Mich., is a member of Students Against Destructive Decisions, National Honor Society and dance club. Some of her volunteer activities include Toys for Tots, Homes for the Troops and the Thyroid Cancer Survivor's Association. Paula was also named Miss Oakland County Teen. "I was fortunate enough to travel all over my state to participate and speak at various activities with the Miss America Organization," she says. Paula plans to major in dance and pre-law at college.

Chandler Macocha

At 13, Chandler Macocha invented the Wheelchair Backpack Helper, a device that allows those in wheelchairs to access a bag carried on the back of their wheelchair. He was inducted into the Kids Hall of Fame and appeared on a talk show for his invention. Now a senior at Oxford High School from Oxford, Mich., Chandler is a member of drama club, National Honor Society, lacrosse club and improv team. He also enjoys filmmaking and has made several videos for school and personal projects. Chandler hopes to major in biomedical engineering and film production at college.

Emily Morgan

Emily Morgan has volunteered more than 500 hours in her community. She created the Shoes for Souls event to collect and donate shoes around her community; created cards for terminally ill children through the Make a Child Smile program; knitted caps for overseas soldiers; and volunteers at a nursing home and soup kitchen. Emily was also named Miss Michigan Junior Sweetheart last year. "Through this opportunity, I have been able to reach out to young girls and influence them positively," she says. Emily, a freshman at Okemos High School from Okemos, Mich., plans to attend college and become an entrepreneur.

Helen Yang

Helen Yang is passionate about every activity she is involved in. "I throw my energy into whatever I choose to take on," she says. Helen, a senior at Troy High School from Troy, Mich., is a member of Science Olympiad, National Honor Society and is the president of her school's future problem solving club. She is also a volunteer for cardiac surgery patients at her local hospital, a student representative for Troy's Ethnic Issues Advisory Board, and she studied abroad in Beijing. Helen plans to become a physician and hopes to share her knowledge of medicine in the under-equipped hospitals in China.
