a back flip into the pool, fully clothed, and yelled for his entire team to follow him into the water.

   Mercy edged Holland by four points — 282 to 278 — and the state team championship came down to the last relay of the day; the 400 freestyle.

  

  “We knew if we finished fourth in that relay we would tie for the championship with Holland,” Dunworth said.

East Grand Rapids celebrates thier MHSAA Division 3 championship at Eastern Michigan University on Saturday.

DIVISION 3

   Grand Rapids Press -- Early last week, East Grand Rapids swimming coach Butch Briggs distributed to each of the Pioneers an itinerary of this weekend's Division 3 state meet at Eastern Michigan University. The final item on that itinerary read: "Saturday, 3:11 p.m., State Championship."

   Briggs' prediction came true Saturday afternoon, although he missed it by 11 minutes. East Grand Rapids won the Division 3 state championship at 3:22 p.m., collecting the program's 16th title and first since 2001 with 416 points. Cranbrook Kingswood finished a distant second, with 234 points.

   AnnArbor.com --Saline High School coach Todd Brunty plunged into the water and his swimmers, the culprits of his soaked state, followed him like dominoes.

   It was a celebratory scene painted by the Hornets’ swimming and diving team, which captured the school’s first Division 1 girls championship, outscoring all 36 of the other teams represented Saturday at the Holland Aquatic Center.
