Farmington Hills Mercy players celebrate after winning a point against Lapeer East on Tuesday.
Such was the case for Farmington Hills Mercy volleyball coach Loretta Vogel on Tuesday.
> Portage Central 3, Rockford 1
Vogel had seen her team take the first two games of a Class A state quarterfinal match against Lapeer East, and then sprint out to a 9-3 lead in the third.
Unfortunately, the Marlins let up a bit and saw East rally to win that third game.
“As I said to them in the huddle, I don’t think I can deal with this much longer,” Vogel said. “I thought we had them in the third game. We had such a lead. When somebody comes back and takes that kind of a game, it’s not to our advantage at all. My heart sunk.”
Fortunately for Vogel, it wasn’t much longer before her heart was lifted back up.

Livonia Ladywood players celebrate their impressive sweep over DeWitt on Tuesday.
DeWitt looked to have the first game well in hand, taking a 23-19 lead on a pair of kills by Kelli VanderSteen.
> Delton Kellogg 3, Holland Christian 0
> North Branch 3, Marysville 0
But the Blazers weren't ready to throw in the towel. Kills by Ladywood's Jennifer Rhodes and a miscue by DeWitt gave the Blazers a 24-23 lead. An ace by Kristie Aurand gave Ladywood the 25-23 win.
This wasn't the first time DeWitt lost the opening game in postseason play. The Panthers lost the opener in three of their four previous matches. But this time the team couldn't overcome the loss.
"We were up 20-14 in that first game ...
With the school on trimesters, Oakland Christian is in the middle of exam week, making things more hectic than usual.
> Battle Creek St. Philip 3, Hillsdale 1
Well, things are about to get a little for hectic, although it’s a problem the team and everyone else around the school are glad to have.
In addition to exams off of the court, the Lancers now have a Class D state semifinal to prepare for, following a three-game sweep of Deckerville in Tuesday’s quarterfinal match.
Thanks to a 25-14, 25-22, 26-24 win, Oakland Christian advances to meet Pellston in a 3:45
p.m. semifinal on Thursday at Kellogg Arena in

Bronson's Allison Kyle (Left) and Hailey Brewer defend the net against Schoolcraft's Ashley Wolthuis.
But that's exactly what happened when Schoolcraft -- ranked No. 1 in Class C -- traveled to face No. 3-ranked Bronson in Class C quarterfinals on Tuesday.
The Vikings (60-9-1) defeated the Eagles in three dominating sets 25-21, 25-22, 25-20 to advance to the state semifinals for the first time since 1990.
"I knew it was going to be a great match because Schoolcraft is a great team," said Bronson head coach Jean LaClair. "We held their offensive very well. I didn't think it would go three sets, so that's a testament to our defense. ...
