Saginaw News -- Midland Dow trained hard for Saturday's Tri-City Girls Swimming and Diving Championships, believing the eight-team meet for Saginaw, Midland and Bay County teams wouldn't be a walk in the park.

The rigorous training schedule made the old cliché come true.

The Chargers won seven of the 12 events - including Division 2 state meet qualifying times in all three of their relays - to pile up 453 points. It was the third-straight Tri-City title for the Chargers, who easily beat ...

Traverse City St. Francis running back Ben Schell looks for running room on Saturday.

Oakland Press -- The leaves changing colors, football and cider mills aren’t the only rites of October.

Farmington Hills Mercy winning the Oakland County girls swim and dive meet is another, or at the very least, is starting to become one.

The heavy favorite heading into Saturday’s annual meet, defending Division 2 state champion Mercy didn’t disappoint, winning its fifth straight county title by earning 335 points.

Kalamazoo Gazette -- A high, drifting ball toward Taylor Galloway’s side of the net is never a good thing for opposing teams.

So when the 6-foot junior from Portage Central slammed one of those aforementioned balls inside Plainwell’s 10-foot-line in Saturday’s Greater Kalamazoo Invitational, it was a moment of volleyball beauty.

Well, almost. Galloway just clipped the net, and instead of a booming kill, it was a side out for the Trojans in the semifinal match — yet the play still prompted a grin from the junior.

“That obviously put a big smile on my face, because I wanted to kill it so bad,” Galloway said afterward. “Even though it was a net violation, it was good to laugh at something like that.”

   That was the way ...

Traverse City Record-Eagle -- It was business as usual for Traverse City St. Francis on Saturday.

With a 56-0 win over Kalkaska at Thirlby Field, the defending Division 7 champion Gladiators moved to 6-0 and clinched a 20th consecutive berth in the state playoffs.

It was also the 52nd straight Lake Michigan Conference win for St. Francis dating back to 2001 -- the

same year Kalkaska last scored a point against the Gladiators.

And, St. Francis did it all Saturday as part of this year's homecoming festivities.

"It's really important to add on to the tradition, especially with all of the alumni here," senior center Jon Buday said. "It's really great to put on a show for them and remind ...

MUSKEGON

Muskegon Chronicle -- The Muskegon Heights football team and the big crowd gathered at Phillips Field didn’t get the playoff berth or the win over another highly-touted team they were looking for Saturday.

Turnovers and missed opportunities spoiled the Tigers’ bid to start 6-0 as much as visiting Detroit Country Day did.

The Yellow Jackets, who lost to first-year Muskegon Heights coach Willie Snead III and Holland Christian in the Division 4 state finals a year ago, made several big defensive plays to hold off the top-ranked Division 5 Tigers 27-14.

Tigers coaches and players will ...
