Novi Detroit Catholic Central remained unbeaten with a 24-7 pounding of Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice in front of a raucous overflow crowd at Shamrock Stadium on Saturday. It was the Shamrocks’ first win over the Warriors since 2003.
Catholic Central got on the scoreboard first on a 15-yard touchdown run by senior Butch Herzog with 11:09 left in the second quarter. Junior Justin D’Agostino’s 35-yard field goal with 7:46 left made the score 10-0 at halftime.
Rice got on the scoreboard in the third on Frankie Popp’s 14-yard touchdown pass to Nick Dunn with 11:55 to play. It was the first points allowed this season by the Catholic Central defense.
Catholic Central broke the game open with two fourth-quarter TDs. Senior Sam Landry connected with junior tight end George Darany for a three-yard touchdown pass with 6:01 left. Niko Palazeti found the endzone with a four-yard run with 2:01 left. Palazeti finished with 68 yards on the ground. Senior Anthony Capatina rushed for 102 yards on 14 carries.
The Shamrocks (4-0) held the Warriors (3-1) to just 152 yards of offense.
“We’ve always prided ourselves on great defense at Catholic Central,”
Catholic Central head coach Tom Mach said. “That’s been the foundation of our program. "

Given that, it was no wonder the shouts of joy in the St. Mary's locker room could be heard by everyone standing outside, after the Eaglets registered a badly-needed 25-16 homecoming win over De La Salle. The game was the Catholic League Central division opener for both teams.
In fairness to St. Mary's (1-2, 1-0), its poor start had a lot to do with playing two of the ...
