Grand Rapids Press -- A massive shove and the sidelines stopped powerful Adam Poel a few yards short of the end zone late in Friday's game, but with his team on top and time ticking off, the Grand Haven junior quarterback scrambled up and screamed happy things.

Oh, yeah.

Moments later, the host Buccaneers ran out the clock to secure a 14-13 victory against West

WDIV-STUDENTANDATHLETE.COM FRIDAY GAME OF THE WEEK

The University of Detroit Jesuit upset formerly unbeaten Auburn Hills Avondale 16-14 Friday in the WDIV-StudentandAthlete.com Game of the Week.

Avondale got on the scoreboard first on a 55-yard punt return by junior Tony Harris for a touchdown with 9:17 left in the second quarter. Junior Jesse Mackall's extra point made the score 7-0.

The Cubs closed the game to 7-6 on a one-yard touchdown run by sophomore Brian Cleary with 3:51 left before halftime. The extra point was blocked. They took a 9-7 lead with 23 seconds left on sophomore Carson McGuire's 29-yard field goal. The Cubs increased the lead to 16-7 on sophomore David Hughes' two-yard touchdown run with 7:07 left in the third quarter. McGuire kicked the extra point.

Avondale was able to close the game to 16-14 as they recovered a blocked punt in the end zone with 2:31 left in the game.

The Yellow Jackets were driving toward a game-winning score in the final minute, but junior Tor Vinson intercepted a pass in the end zone to secure the win.

The victory was the second in a row for U of D after losing 20 straight. The last time the Cubs won two consecutive games was early in the 2006 season.

MONTAGUE

Muskegon Chronicle -- Montague had lost heartbreakers to Oakridge three of the past four years.

So every time Drew Pineda and his senior teammates heard about Oakridge's 33-game West Michigan Conference unbeaten streak, it made those tough, emotional losses hurt even more. No way were they going to let it happen again. "Losing to them the past two years hurt a lot," said Pineda, who scored three touchdowns on Friday. "We heard a lot about their streak and that really motivated us for this game." Montague won its first three games this fall in impressive fashion, but Friday's score - Montague 42, Oakridge 0 - will get the attention of high school football watchers all across the state.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS

Detroit News -- Tommie Watkins, Grosse Pointe North's workhorse running back, had one thought with his team nursing a two-point lead with less than four minutes remaining.

"I just wanted to hold on to the ball and get the yards I needed," he said. "If I would have fumbled I think I would have cried."
