Area senior players net one last chance
Nearly 200 show their skills in fron of college coaches at fourth annual foundation event
A couple of hundred Metro Detroit senior boys basketball players got one final opportunity to impress college coaches Saturday at the Horatio Williams Foundation’s fourth annual Second Chance Basketball Games held at Detroit Renaissance High School.
The event was designed to highlight the skills of area seniors who have not yet received college scholarship offers in front of Division II, Division III, junior college, and community college coaches from around the state. Division I coaches cannot participate due to NCAA recruiting restrictions.
The majority of players participating came from
Nearly 200 boys played ins front of 27 college coaches during the event.
Senior girls will play next Saturday, April 17, at the
"The idea was to give a kid an opportunity to play who might not have that opportunity," Williams told the Detroit News. "The key thing is to have college coaches have a look at these players. Maybe they hadn't seen them before. They get a chance to watch them compete and meet them, one on one."
Last year, 16 boys and six girls received college scholarships after the event.

Grosse Pointe Woods University Liggett downed Royal Oak Shrine 2-0 in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4, District 54 girls soccer semifinal on Thursday, June 3.
Michigan Independent Athletic Conference champion Liggett improved to 9-5-1 on the season. The victory avenged a May 15 4-3 loss to Shrine.
Thursday’s game was tied 0-0 at half. Liggett got on the board about five minutes after the break when junior Sarah Altimore set up
freshman Eleni Pitses for a perfectly placed long-range shot to the far post.
The Liggett defense, anchored by juniors
Grace Edmonds, Keegin Fisher, and Kathryn LaLonde, as well as freshman Ariana Castillo, and freshman goalkeeper Beth Ottosen kept
Shrine scoreless.
Senior Paige Counsman’s goal made the final 2-0.
The Knights advance to face No. 3-ranked Madision Heights Bishop Foley. Foley followed up their 8-0 win over Sterling Heights Parkway Christian with an 8-0 win over Birmingham Roeper on Thursday.

Defending Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 champion and No. 2-ranked Bloomfield Hills Marian powered past Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook Kingswood 6-0 in a District 25 semifinal on Thursday, June 3.
Junior Elizabeth Tresnak scored 3:16 into the game and the Mustangs didn’t look back. Junior Martha Stevens led Marian with two goals. Juniors Michelle Mirasol, Sara Zawacki, and Erin Ring each scored for the Mustangs.
Marian (17-1-2) moves on to face state honorable mention Auburn Hills Avondale in the district final on Saturday, June 5, at 1 p.m.
Avondale (11-7-3) eliminated Bloomfield Hills Lahser (5-13-2) in the other semifinal. Avondale senior forward and class valedictorian Natalie Lopes scored the game-winner in the first half.
“That should be a very competitive game (with Avondale),” Marian coach Barry Brodsky Brodsky told the Oakland Press. “I've seen them a few times this year. They've got a very dangerous group of forwards. They're keepers are very strong. They've got very good defenders so I think we've got our work cut out for us.”
“The one thing I respect about our team is that even though we were down 6-0, they were fighting just as hard as when it was 0-0, so the heart and the effort was there,” O’Kulich said. “It's just that Marian is a phenomenal team. I've been coaching 14 seasons and that, from top to bottom, is the best team I've seen in girls soccer.”
The senior forward made sure Holland Christian cashed in this scoring chance.

“Claire gave a great ball,” Hieftje said. “I was in the
right place at the right time.”
Hieftje helped the Maroons beat Grand Rapids Christian for the second time this season.
They won a regular-season match 2-0 April 30 in
Grand Rapids Christian, however, fielded a different-looking roster than in
the first matchup.
The Eagles called up several players from their junior varsity team and added both depth and speed,
Holland Christian coach Mark Recker said.
The longer the game went scoreless, the more concerned the Maroons became.
“We missed some opportunities early. I thought we might pay a price,” Recker said.
Broekhuizen and Hieftje teamed up to deliver the goal Holland Christian needed.
