Maples three-peat

Birmingham Seaholm wins third straight MHSAA girls golf Division 2 championship on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2015

 

  Division 2 No. 2-ranked Birmingham Seaholm powered its third straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 2 girls golf championship on Saturday, Oct. 17, at Bedford Valley Golf Course in Battle Creek.

   Seaholm finished with a two-day total of 664 (335-329). No. 1 Midland Dow was second at 677, 13 strokes behind. No. 3 South Lyon was third at 692. No. 4 Okemos finished fourth at 706 and No. 7 St. Joseph was fifth at 712.

   The Maples entered Saturday with a two-stroke lead over Dow.

  Seaholm had three golfers finish in the Top 10. Senior Jordan Michalak led Seaholm, finishing third with a score of 159 (80-79). Seniors Allegra Cunningham and Catherine Markley both finished at 164, tying for eighth place. Freshman Hailey Roovers scored 177. Seaholm also used Cate Joelson on Friday and Emma Whittington on Saturday, but neither figured in the top-four scoring.

   “It’s every bit as great the third time as it is the first,” Seaholm co-coach Cathie Fritz told reporter. “The girls were very optimistic and very focused on the here and now.”

   It was Seaholm’s fifth Division 2 championship since 2006.
