Plymouth -- It was a game for the ages!
Some in attendance called it the "greatest game ever."

Defending champion Orchard Lake St. Mary's and Marquette battled for a national record 109 minutes to a 1-1 tie after officials called the game after eight overtimes and declared both teams Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 1 Boys Hockey Co-Champions March 8 near midnight at the Compuware Sports Arena.

After consulting with each school's athletic director and the tournament manager, Randy Allen, the MHSAA assistant director in charge of hockey halted the game "for the health and welfare of the athletes."

The game started at 7 p.m. and was halted at approximately 11:45 p.m.
It was a great call, as it would have been ashame to see either of these incredible teams go home as losers. Instead, exhausted players from both teams met at center ice to shake hands, embraced, and hold up the shared championship trophy.
It was only 106 days earlier that St. Mary's football team battled East Grand Rapids for a state record five overtimes at Ford Field in the Division 3 Football Final.
The game was a rematch of last year's state final game where St. Mary's beat Marquette 4-2.
Marquette got on the scoreboard first this year on a goal in the second period by Mike Peterson on an assist from Eric Rizzio.

The Redmen were less than two minutes away from the title, when St. Mary's Head Coach Brian Klanow called a timeout and pulled his goalie in favor of an extra attacker. With Junior Shane Hallas sent the puck to the net after a face-off in the Marquette zone. Tim Hooker found the rebound and then the back of the net to tie the score at 1-1 and send it to overtime.
Both goalies were truly amazing during the game.

St. Mary's Ryan Morley-Stockton set a state record, saving an incredible 58 shots in the game, surpassing the 48 saves made by Flint Powers Catholic goalie Matt Schooley in the 1982 Class B final.

His counterpart, Jon Nezich, stopped 33 shots in the game.

Marquette (20-5-4) beat Grosse Pointe North 3-0 in the semifinals and Rockford 2-1 in the quarterfinals to advance to the finals for the second year in a row.

St. Mary's (15-12-3) shut out Clarkston 2-0 in the semifinals and Macomb Dakota 5-0 in the quarterfinals to earn a chance to repeat as state champions.
"You know what? It is what it is," St. Mary's Head Coach Brian Klanow said. "It's history, that's what it is. The kids -- hats off to all of them. What a tribute this is to high school hockey in Michigan."

The previous longest game in state history had just been set a couple of weeks ago, when Sault Ste. Marie beat Petoskey, 2-1, in six overtimes, consuming 92 minutes and 34 seconds of time, in a Regional tournament game. In 2007, Aurora beat Solon 2-1 in eight overtimes in a 105-minute game in Ohio, which is believed to be the longest game ever nationally.
The National High School Sports Record Book, published by the National Federation of High School Associations, lists an 11-overtime game in Minnesota between Minneapolis South (3) and Thief River Falls (2) from 1955 as the longest game in terms of number of overtimes. High school overtimes in 1955 were only five minutes in length at that time, as compared to eight today, meaning the Minnesota game would have only been 100 minutes long.

Michigan high school overtime rules indicate teams will play unlimited eight-minute overtime periods until someone scores. Periods are 15 minutes long in regulation. There is no rule for shootouts to decide a game. The ice is resurfaced and players go to locker rooms after each even-numbered overtime period is concluded.

St. Mary's has won three state hockey titles in the past four years. The Eaglets won the MHSAA Division 3 championship in 2005.
Marquette won the Division 1 championship in 2004, the Class A championship in 1995, and the Tier I title in 1997.
