State champions – back to back

Clarkston Everest Collegiate wins MHSAA boys golf Division 4 championship on Saturday, June 10, 2017

Clarkston Everest Collegiate won its second straight Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 4 boys golf championship at Forest Akers East at Michigan State University on Saturday, June 10.

Everest was tied with Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian after the first day of the tournament, but pulled away on day two to win the championship by 14 strokes with score of 629.

Kalamazoo Christian finished third at 653. Lansing Christian was fourth at 659. Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Preparatory scored 661 to finish fifth.

“To repeat is really hard,” Everest coach Dave Smith told reporters. “I’ve seen teams come back with the same five guys they had the year before and not be able to repeat, so it’s fantastic. The kids played really well today. The other teams put the pressure on, and our guys didn’t crumble.”

Sophomore Mitch Lowney led Everest by shooting a combined 1-under-par (143) for both days. Team captain Joey McMahon shot 152 and was tied for eighth overall. J.C. James shot 163. Nick Korns finished at 171 and Kevin Meehan shot 174 for Everest, which bettered its winning score from last year by eight shots.
